Baked Mac-and-Cheese Dessert… a typical Bulgarian dish from my childhood
Some of the most wonderful years in people’s lives are the first years of childhood, those years of love and laughter. Only children can laugh like that, because they do not know feelings like hate or disappointment. If you keep a little part from that kindness in you, a little bit from that ability to enjoy the little things in life… then I think you will always keep a part from that kid you once were. Since I like to recall my childhood memories from time to time – this weekend I decided to prepare a dish that my mom used to make me, namely this Mac-and-Cheese dessert.
Mac-and-Cheese Dessert from my childhood
Ingredients
- 250 g Macaroni
- 60 g Butter
- 450 ml Milk
- 2 Eggs
- 200 g White cheese e.g. Feta cheese
- 200 g Sugar
- Vanilla extract
Directions
- Bring water to boil and cook the pasta until “al dente” i.e. cooked but still slightly firm. Do not add salt to the water, since we’re cooking a dessert 😉
- Beat the sugar with the eggs and vanilla in a bowl.
- Add the milk and mix well.
- Finally break the cheese into small pieces using a fork or your hands and stir it in the milk mixture.
- Mix the macaroni with the butter and transfer into a casserole.
- Pour the milk mixture over the macaroni.
- Bake at 190°C degrees, upper heat for about 30-40 minutes or until the macaroni start to turn golden and the mixture thickens.
- In the last 5 minutes, sprinkle the dish with sugar, then return to the oven to caramelise. You can increase the upper heat to 220°C to get that crispy and sweet sugar crust.
